In the second module of the project, young researchers (PhD students, early postdoctoral researchers) report at the school about their work. It has been recognized that the current education of students at the university lacks a training in science communication. When asked about their own opportunities to acquire public outreach skills through practice-oriented training during their studies, 64.2% of the scientists retrospectively rated their possibilities as poor or very poor (Könneker, 2019).
Our project gives practical experiences to the young researchers since they have the task to explain their research in a simple and elucidating manner to a school class. The project fosters the dialogue between the young researchers and the pupils, and the pupils are encouraged to ask fundamental questions about science, measurement techniques, data analysis, life at the university, and about the professional work in science and research. The benefit for the young researchers is clear: They gain experiences in public outreach, they reflect about their work, and they will be motivated in their research by the interest of the pupils. On the other hand, the high school pupils get important informations for the future planing of their life. Further, the reception of the pupils for science will be much higher when a young researcher gives a presentation with a discussion than in case of an elder researcher who is far away from the daily life of a pupil.
